Ways to Remove a Real Estate Lockbox

If you have closed a deal in buying a house and the realtor has not yet taken the lockbox off the property even after your repeated requests for him to provide you with the proper code, you have to find better ways of unlocking your new home.

However, if you have already made several attempts and you still cannot unlock it, then it is time that you have to cut it off. Although this may damage a part of your newly bought home, you need to access your house. Fortunately, there are ways to remove the lockbox if you are not successful in getting the realtor to disclose the combination code.

Take out the doorknobs by unscrewing the trim with a good quality Makita cordless drill. The trim is the metal ring that can be found between the doorknobs that is held by screws on both sides of the door.

After removing the trim, get rid of the two screws that hold the doorknobs together as well. Remove these screws one at a time to allow you to pull the doorknobs apart. Once done, slide the lockbox off the doorknobs then replace those doorknobs back into the door.

If a lockbox is attached to a fence or water spout of the house, it is now more difficult since they are not detachable things. So, cut the lockbox with bolt cutters and reciprocating saw. Make sure that you do not cut whatever attachment there is in the lockbox. On the other hand, be careful with drilling and cutting to prevent accidents.

Although the process takes a long time, as long as you are equipped with the right tools like Makita cordless drills, you will have no problem unlocking your home.
